The Perfect Coffee Cup: An Inside Look at the Rising Popularity of Cat Cafes
Since its opening in 2017, Mac Tabby cat cafes in North Carolina have helped hundreds of cats find forever homes, while also bringing joy to their human patrons. According to Yelp, the number of cat cafes across the United States has grown significantly over the past five years, becoming increasingly popular. Originating in Taiwan and Japan in the late 1990s and early 2000s, cat cafes now play a significant role in U.S. cities by caring for and adopting out stray cats to cafe-goers. Owners and frequent visitors alike have shared with USA Today that these cafes—filled with coffee, snacks, and occasionally alcoholic beverages—are as much a sanctuary for humans as they are for cats.
**Why the Appeal?**
67-year-old Jet Taylor, a regular at a Concord, North Carolina, cat cafe, explains, “If I’m not at home and someone’s looking for me, they just come here.” Taylor, a fan of gray and black cats, visits the cat cafe nearly every day to read magazines about airplanes and motorcycles while enjoying some feline affection.
Cindy Scope, who opened the Kitty Cat Lounge in Lakeland, Florida, in 2023, in partnership with Saving Paws Rescue of Florida, says, “My guests come in one way, and they leave the cat room another way, feeling happy and calm.”
**Growth in Popularity**
2024 has seen the highest number of new cat cafes added to Yelp compared to any previous year, with significant growth in North Carolina, Florida, and Hawaii post-COVID-19. These cafes not only provide a comforting space for visitors but also offer cats a much-needed chance for a better life.
**Mac Tabby: A Sanctuary for Cats**
Mac Tabby, a chain of cat cafes in North Carolina, boasts three locations: Charlotte, Concord, and Salisbury. Each cafe hosts around 15 cats from the "Meow" rescue group, and nearly 1,900 cats have been adopted by customers over the past eight years, according to the cafe’s owner and "chief cat caregiver," Lori Konawalik.
"When we first started, people weren’t exactly sure what it was, and there was a lot of explaining about how it worked and what it was," says Konawalik, 45. "Now, people come in knowing the general concept."
**A Better Life for Cats**
Cat cafes not only provide a unique experience for visitors but also give cats a chance at a better life. Diana Roach, who adopted two cats from Mac Tabby in Charlotte, says, "If they made it to Mac Tabby, they’re close to home. They’ve hit the jackpot."
In Mecklenburg County, home to Charlotte, animal shelters have been at capacity for the past two years, with euthanasia rates rising, according to the local animal control reports.
**The Growing Impact of Cat Cafes on Animal Shelters**
Polk County, home to the Kitty Cat Lounge in Florida, has been one of the areas with the highest number of cat euthanasia in the state in recent years. According to data from the Florida Veterinary Medical College, over 3,500 cats were euthanized in 2024 alone.
**How Cat Cafes Are Shaping the Future of Pet Adoption**
Many cat cafes now require reservations to avoid overcrowding the cat room, which is usually separate from the cafe’s main seating area. When Roach first visited Mac Tabby, she booked three 30-minute slots in the cat room, knowing "we’d need more than half an hour," she says. Soon after, she and her husband adopted two spotted kittens, naming them Dory and Mickey.
