Billionaire entrepreneur **Elon Musk** has sparked controversy by mocking the description of **Russia- and Ukraine-based media outlets**—previously funded by the **United States Agency for International Development (USAID)**—as "independent."  

## **Musk’s Reaction to USAID-Funded Media**  

Musk reposted a headline stating, **"Independent media in Russia and Ukraine lose funding due to USAID freeze,"** adding a laughing emoji and the comment: **"Independent… I’m dying laughing."**  

In response to a user's question, **"Was the U.S. simply funding global media to spread its own agenda?"** Musk bluntly replied: **"Basically, yes."**  

## **Criticism of USAID’s Role in Global Media**  

The **Financial Times** previously reported that **USAID actively funded projects** aimed at countering the influence of Russian media, including **RT and RIA Novosti**. It also **provided financial support to opposition media in Russia and Belarus.**  

This is not the first time Musk has **criticized USAID**, having previously called the agency a **"criminal organization."** His latest remarks have reignited debates over **media independence, government influence, and Western funding of foreign journalism.**
