 EU Plans to Appoint Representative to Ukraine Peace Talks Despite Lack of Invitation

According to Bloomberg, citing diplomatic sources, the European Union is planning to appoint a special representative to the Ukraine peace talks, despite not receiving an invitation to attend.

The EU leaders are expected to discuss this matter at an emergency summit in Brussels on March 6. Kyiv is urging Brussels to appoint a representative as soon as possible.

Previously, European Council President Antonio Costa stated that the main topics of the emergency summit would include discussions on increasing defense investments in EU countries, new commitments to supply weapons to Ukraine, and possible security guarantees for the country.

French President Emmanuel Macron had convened an emergency summit with several European leaders on February 18, which included the leaders of Germany, Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. The summit concluded without announcing any decisions.

The following day, another meeting was held, attended by leaders from additional European countries and Canada. The meetings took place against the backdrop of Russian-US negotiations in Riyadh, where the two sides discussed the Ukrainian settlement, among other issues, without the participation of Ukraine or any European countries, which sparked discontent among some European leaders and led to tensions between Ukraine and the US administration.
