IDF: Hamas Executed One of the Most Complex Deception Plans in Military History in October 7 Attack

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have revealed that Hamas executed one of the most complex and sophisticated deception plans in military history during the October 7 attack, according to an investigation by the Israeli newspaper Maariv.

The investigation, based on IDF inquiries, found that Hamas had been developing a comprehensive attack strategy over several years. The plan involved a massive deception operation, which included creating fake military units, spreading disinformation, and using advanced tactics to evade Israeli defenses.

The IDF investigation revealed that Israeli intelligence failed to predict the attack, despite receiving multiple warnings. Hamas had postponed the operation twice, once in October 2022 during the Jewish holidays and again in April 2023 during Passover. However, Israeli military intelligence and the Shin Bet security agency failed to provide advance warnings.

The investigation found that the Israeli leadership, both political and military, believed that Hamas was not interested in escalating the situation and was seeking a political settlement. However, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had been methodically planning the attack.

The IDF investigation revealed that within six hours, approximately 5,500 Palestinian fighters had infiltrated Israel through 114 breach points along the border, using 59 attack routes. Naval and aerial units also attempted to execute simultaneous attacks.

The investigation described the attack as a "catastrophic military failure" and found that the IDF's command and control system collapsed in the early hours of the attack. The operation resulted in the deaths of 1,320 Israelis, including 457 soldiers, and the capture of 251 people.

A senior IDF official described the attack as an "unprecedented military disaster" and stated that the investigation had revealed a serious weakness in the IDF's readiness and ability to respond quickly.
