## **Introduction**  

Recent reports indicate that Israel has received preliminary approval from the United States to maintain a long-term military presence in southern Lebanon. This decision follows Israel’s failure to fully withdraw by the original deadline set in the ceasefire agreement, raising tensions with Lebanon and complicating regional diplomacy.

Israeli officials argue that their continued military presence in parts of southern Lebanon is necessary for security reasons. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has emphasized the need to monitor Hezbollah’s activities near the border, citing intelligence reports suggesting that the militant group is rebuilding its surveillance and intelligence network.  

According to Israeli media, during Netanyahu’s recent visit to Washington, discussions with U.S. officials resulted in an understanding that Israel could maintain military control over five key positions in Lebanon, despite the ceasefire agreement’s withdrawal deadline. While Washington reportedly rejected Israel’s initial request for a ten-day extension, it approved a modified plan allowing Israeli forces to remain in select locations for security monitoring.
