French President Emmanuel Macron has admitted that he left the United States feeling "disappointed" after failing to make progress in talks on US tariffs on European goods.
Speaking on the French television channel BFMTV, Macron said that he had raised the issue of additional tariffs during his official visit to Washington and his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. However, he described the talks as "very difficult" and said that he had left without any hope of a breakthrough.
Macron's comments come after Trump announced plans to impose tariffs of up to 25% on European goods, including cars.
The European Union has warned that it will take retaliatory measures if the US goes ahead with the tariffs. The EU's trade commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom, has said that the bloc is "prepared to take all necessary measures" to protect its interests.
