Namibia Mourns the Death of Its First President, Sam Nujoma, at 95
Namibia’s **first president and independence leader, Sam Nujoma,** has passed away at the age of **95** in the capital **Windhoek**. Current President **Nangolo Mbumba** confirmed his death, stating that Nujoma had been **hospitalized for three weeks** due to an illness from which he could not recover.
## **A Revolutionary Leader**
Nujoma was a key figure in Namibia’s struggle for independence from **South Africa**, leading the country to freedom in **1990**. He co-founded the **South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) in 1960**, which played a crucial role in the liberation movement.
After independence, he served as **Namibia’s first president from 1990 to 2005**, ensuring stability and unity in the young nation. Even after stepping down as head of state, Nujoma continued to lead **SWAPO** until **2007**, marking **47 years in power**.

Nujoma is widely credited with **maintaining peace and stability** in Namibia after its independence from apartheid-era South Africa. His administration also **championed women’s and children’s rights**, implementing policies such as **child support payments for out-of-wedlock births**.
