New Doping Case Rocks Saudi Football
A new doping case has shaken Saudi football, with a prominent player facing suspension and a potential ban from the sport. The case has been referred to the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
According to legal expert Ahmed Al-Sheikh, the Saudi Anti-Doping Committee discovered a positive sample from a player containing a banned substance. The player claimed that the substance was ingested through consuming tea or coffee before a match.
The Saudi committee initially suspended the player for a short period of three to four months. However, FIFA intervened, requesting the case file from the Saudi Football Federation, and subsequently appealed the decision to CAS, which ruled in favor of FIFA.
Al-Sheikh did not disclose the player's name but confirmed that the individual is a Saudi professional footballer. This case comes amidst a relatively quiet period for doping cases in Saudi football, with the most notable previous case involving Fahad Al-Muwallad, a former player for Al-Shabab.
Recent discussions have centered around Brazilian player Romarinho, who transferred to Qatari club Al-Rayyan in January 2025 after his contract with Saudi club Al-Ittihad was terminated. Saudi football has witnessed several doping cases in the past, including those involving players such as Mohammad Noor and Fahad Al-Muwallad, who received suspensions of four years and 18 months, respectively.
