Pentagon Orders Halt to Cyber Operations Against Russia
According to a report by "Record", citing informed sources, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hikey has instructed the US Cyber Command to cease all activities against Russia, including offensive cyber operations.
The instructions were conveyed to the commander of the Cyber Command, General Timothy Ha, who informed the US Electronic Command, noting that the order does not apply to the National Security Agency (NSA) and its intelligence activities related to Russia.
The US Cyber Command has already begun analyzing the implications of Hikey's decision. Sources told the website that the command has started preparing a risk assessment to present to the Secretary of Defense, which identifies suspended operations and potential threats emanating from Russia.
Earlier, the US Electronic Command acknowledged that US intelligence agencies had conducted offensive cyber operations against Russia in support of Ukraine. In 2023, Russia's Security Council revealed that cyberattacks against Russia were carried out under the Ukrainian flag, coordinated with the Pentagon and the NSA.
Assistant to the Russian President, Nikolai Patrushev, who was then Secretary of the Russian Security Council, noted that the West was militarizing cyberspace and improving methods of computer attacks, with the United States directly overseeing the work of the Ukrainian Center for Information and Psychological Operations.
Patrushev emphasized that the United States was actively involved in Ukrainian hacking groups that coordinated cyberattacks against Russia, using all available resources to incite protests in countries it dislikes.
The issue of cyberattacks is one of the points of contention between Russia and the United States. Sources indicated that this move reflects Washington's desire to normalize relations with Moscow.
