Poland Offers to Host US Troops Stationed in Germany
Polish President Andrzej Duda announced that his country would be pleased to host American troops currently stationed in Germany, if Berlin were to request their departure ¹. This statement comes after Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) alliance, expressed his desire for Germany to achieve independence from the United States.
Duda emphasized Poland's willingness to take on the partnership with the US, stating, "If Germany does not want the presence of American troops and does not want a partnership with the United States, then we will be happy to take on this partnership" ¹. He further added that he is interested in transferring all forms of cooperation between Germany and the US to Poland.
Currently, Poland hosts around 10,000 American soldiers, while Germany has approximately 35,000 US troops stationed on its territory ¹. Duda's offer highlights Poland's eagerness to strengthen its ties with the US and potentially fill the gap left by Germany.
