Poland's efforts to find a storage site for nuclear waste have hit a snag, with no municipality willing to host the facility. The country plans to build its first nuclear power plant, which is expected to go online in 2033.

According to RMF FM radio station, authorities have been unable to find a willing municipality since 2023. The Ministry of Industry is now considering increasing compensation for local authorities that agree to host the storage facility.

The Ministry of Climate and Environment had announced a competition among municipalities to select a site for the national nuclear waste storage facility. However, no municipality has expressed interest, and the deadline has been extended until June 30, 2024.
Poland currently has one surface-level nuclear waste storage facility, which has been in operation since 1961. The new storage facility must be operational before the first nuclear power plant is launched.
