Publication Date: 28.02.2025 | : GMT

In a historic move, President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order recognizing English as the official language of the United States at the federal level. This decision marks a significant shift in the country's language policy and has sparked intense debate among linguists, politicians, and the general public.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the executive order will revoke a previous order signed by President Bill Clinton, which required federal agencies and recipients of federal funds to provide language support for non-English speaking citizens. While federal agencies will still be allowed to provide documents and services in other languages, this will no longer be mandatory.

The executive order aims to "promote unity, improve government efficiency, and create a pathway for civic participation," according to a summary of the document obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

During his presidential campaign, Trump argued that immigrants who do not speak English put a strain on the American education system. He stated, "We have a situation where people are coming into our schools, and they don't speak English, and they can't communicate in the classroom."

According to the US Census Bureau, over 78% of Americans speak only English at home, but millions of people use Spanish, Chinese, and other languages.

More than 30 states have already enacted laws making English the official language at the state level.
