U.S. Drone Strike Kills Senior Saudi Al-Qaeda Leader in Yemen

A U.S. drone strike reportedly killed a high-ranking Saudi leader of Al-Qaeda in Yemen’s southeastern Shabwa province. The militant, known as Abu Mohammed Al-Hudhali Al-Makki, was targeted on Wednesday in the Musayni’ah area of Saeed district, south of Ataq, the provincial capital.

## **Details of the Strike**

According to sources, the strike was carried out by an American unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) against an Al-Qaeda stronghold in the region. This follows the recent elimination of Abu Ali Al-Disi, another senior Al-Qaeda warlord and the leader of the group’s Qayfa province, also killed in a U.S. air raid in Shabwa.

The operation comes just days after another Al-Qaeda member, Abu Yusuf Al-Muhammedi, was killed in an explosion from a booby-trapped motorcycle in the Al-Sammad area of Al-Wadi district, east of Marib.

## **The Broader Conflict in Yemen**

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating war that has claimed approximately 377,000 lives by the end of 2021. The country’s economy has suffered cumulative losses estimated at $126 billion, leaving around 80% of the population—roughly 35 million people—in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to United Nations reports.

## **Implications of the U.S. Airstrikes**

The latest U.S. military actions highlight Washington’s continued counterterrorism efforts in Yemen. However, with ongoing instability and humanitarian crises, the long-term impact of these strikes on Yemen’s security landscape remains uncertain.
