The United States has taken custody of Rafael Caro Quintero, a notorious Mexican drug lord accused of murdering a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent in 1985. Quintero was extradited to the U.S. along with 28 other inmates requested by the American government.
According to an anonymous Mexican government official, Quintero's extradition was confirmed on Thursday. The Mexican Attorney General's Office stated that the 29 inmates handed over on Thursday face charges related to drug trafficking, among other crimes.
This development comes as the Mexican government attempts to avoid U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican imports, set to take effect next week.
Quintero's arrest by Mexican forces in 1985 was a significant milestone in the country's efforts to combat organized crime. His extradition marks a crucial step in the U.S. government's pursuit of justice for the murdered DEA agent.
