22 Killed in Ecuador as Rival Drug Cartels Clash

A brutal conflict between rival drug cartels in Ecuador's port city of Guayaquil has left at least 22 people dead and three others injured. The violence erupted on Thursday, with local police initially reporting 12 fatalities.

According to the police, "22 people have lost their lives, and three others have been injured by gunfire. The injured victims have been transferred to various medical centers for treatment."

A police source revealed that the clash occurred between two rival factions of the Los Tiguerones drug trafficking group, one of the most powerful organizations in the country. These factions are among approximately 20 groups linked to international cartels that have been causing chaos in Ecuador, a nation of 18 million people that was previously known for its peace.

The government of President Daniel Noboa has labeled these criminal organizations as "terrorist" and is working to combat them. Ecuador's strategic location between Colombia and Peru, the world's largest cocaine-producing countries, and its Pacific ports have made it a battleground for violent conflicts related to the drug trade.
