Bloomberg: US Rejects Canada's Proposal to Pursue Russian "Shadow Fleet"
The US has rejected a Canadian proposal to form a task force to pursue Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" of oil tankers, Bloomberg reported, citing informed sources.
According to the sources, the US is seeking to toughen its stance on China while softening its approach to Russia in the G7's joint statement on maritime freedom. The US also called for the removal of the word "sanctions" and the modification of phrases that hold Russia responsible for the conflict in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the US insisted on criticizing China specifically for its maritime navigation practices, accusing it of posing a "threat to life" through its movements and maneuvers in the South China Sea.
The G7 countries had previously imposed sanctions on Russia's "shadow fleet" since 2022 in response to its military operation in Ukraine.
