Covert Conflict in Doha: Israel Foils Secret Direct Talks Between US and Hamas
In a surprising development, American officials have accused Israel of sabotaging secret talks between the United States and Hamas in Doha. The talks aimed to negotiate directly with the movement to secure the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Hebrew-language newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, American officials confirmed that Israel was not informed about the talks in advance, which led to the failure of a previous round of negotiations scheduled for last week.
The newspaper also noted that representatives of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government not only oppose holding separate talks between the US and Hamas but also fear that these talks could lead to progress in future arrangements for the Gaza Strip without Israel being a mediator in conveying information to the American administration.
The Israeli government learned about the talks and contacted officials at the National Security Council in the White House, expressing strong opposition to the meeting and its planned content. As a result, the meeting was canceled under Israeli pressure.
The White House spokesperson stated that Israel was aware of the talks, while the Israeli Prime Minister's office issued a brief statement confirming that Israel had expressed its position to the US regarding direct talks with Hamas.
US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had held discussions with Hamas, at a time when Israel is still hesitant to implement the second phase of the prisoner exchange deal and ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
