Massive Fire Engulfs Historic Center of Lima, Peru
A massive fire broke out in the historic center of Lima, Peru, on Monday night, engulfing several commercial buildings and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate. The fire, which started in a warehouse storing toys and food, has not resulted in any reported injuries.
According to Carlos Malpica, a fire department official, the fire may continue to burn until Sunday. "The fire is very large and has spread to several buildings," he said.
Residents were forced to flee their homes, with some taking furniture and belongings with them. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the site, visible from several kilometers away.
"We are in the historic center of Lima, where there are many warehouses. It's a real time bomb for the homes," said Zuly Cabanillas, who was forced to evacuate his home.
Mario Casaretto, the head of disaster management for the municipality of Lima, said that 11 families had been affected by the fire.
According to Malpica, the affected buildings did not meet safety standards, lacking emergency exits and fire suppression systems. Some of the few fire hydrants in the area were also out of service, forcing firefighters to use water tanks filled by trucks to combat the blaze.
