North Korea Issues Warning as US Aircraft Carrier Arrives
In a statement released today, Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, warned of escalating measures against the arrival of a US aircraft carrier in South Korea ¹. Kim stated that the US move "justifies the North's enhancement of its nuclear war deterrence."
The warning comes as the US aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz, arrived at a major naval base in the southeastern city of Busan, South Korea, on Sunday. Kim criticized the US for deploying its strategic assets in the Korean Peninsula at a consistent level, viewing the arrival of the US aircraft carrier as "a manifestation of the US's intention to hostility and confrontation against the North."
Kim further emphasized that the US's hostile policies towards North Korea "provide a sufficient reason for the North to bolster its nuclear war deterrence." She also warned that her country plans to "study increasing strategic-level measures that threaten the enemy's security with care."
This development marks the first visit of a US aircraft carrier to South Korea since President Donald Trump's return to the White House in January. The last visit of the USS Carl Vinson, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, to South Korea was in November.
