US State Department Plans to Close Dozens of Consulates and Cut Hundreds of Jobs Abroad
The New York Times reported that the US State Department has drafted a plan to close dozens of consulates and cut hundreds of jobs abroad, a move that could harm US intelligence gathering and diplomatic relationships.
According to US officials, the plan, which is expected to be implemented this summer, would also involve the closure of additional diplomatic missions, dealing a blow to the US government's efforts to build partnerships and gather intelligence.
The department also plans to lay off many local citizens who work at its missions, who make up two-thirds of the agency's workforce and often provide the foundation for US diplomats' knowledge of their working environments.
The report noted that embassies house officers from the military, intelligence, law enforcement, health, commerce, treasury, and other agencies, all of whom monitor developments in the host country and work with local officials to address any issues.
The effort to cut diplomatic jobs and personnel abroad is part of a broader campaign to reduce the State Department's budget by up to 20%, according to US officials.
